The majority of beauty products used on a daily basis contain toxic and dangerous chemical concoctions. Some of these harsh chemicals contain known carcinogens (cancer causing agent) and other toxic chemicals that can cause damage not only to our environment, but also to our health. One look on the back of a shampoo or lotion bottle ingredient list will have you trying to pronounce long and complex words that make you feel like your speaking another language. Have you ever wondered why certain ingredients are in your personal care products or what the type of effect it may have on you and your family’s health?
Many consumers make the mistake of assuming that because their personal care and beauty products can be purchased at a local retailer, that they are safe and will not pose a health risk. Unfortunately, nothing could be further from the truth. The public puts their trust in big name corporations in hopes they will produce safe consumer products. In fact, the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) lacks the ability to require companies to test their products for safety before the products are put on the shelves at your local retailer.
We must become label readers and educate ourselves as to what potential chemicals we might be slathering on our bodies or what toxic chemicals might be floating around in our children’s bath or what we are exposing ourselves to when shampooing our hair. Some may question whether it matters about the ingredients in their personal care products since our skin shields us and is used as a protective barrier.
It absolutely matters!! For instance, our scalp contains 650 sweat glands, 1000 nerve endings, and 20 blood vessels all of which absorb any and all toxic ingredients that are lurking inside our shampoo and conditioner. Some may forget that our skin is our largest organ and what we put on our bodies will end up inside our bodies. Those nasty ingredients actually absorb directly into our blood stream. Contrary to the old belief system that our skin will protect us from soaking in any bad stuff-- there are pain patches and nicotine patches that are placed directly on our skin!!
Who would have ever imagined that you might be moisturizing your face with the same ingredient that is in window cleaner or using products that contain hormonal preservatives—ones in which mimic the hormone estrogen! Maybe you have been using mineral oil on your baby to sooth its irritated skin. I bet you won’t feel like rubbing it into your baby’s skin after finding out that mineral oil is made out of leftover refined gasoline—that’s right—the petroleum companies sell the leftover refined gasoline to the cosmetic companies! These companies add some artificial fragrance to it, and then turn around and sell it as mineral oil. It is also very important to note that children’s bodies are unable to fully process toxic chemicals until they are between 7-9 years of age—and we literally start slathering stuff on our children and bathing them in all kinds chemical formulations from the time they are born! If adults succumb to the toxic effects of the chemicals, could you imagine the effects it is having on our children’s bodies? For this reason, we must be extra vigilant to use only pure and non-toxic products on our little ones.
If you find this information disturbing, then I have done my job! This blog is all about waking people up to the fact that we live in a toxic society. Coming up next blog entry, I will be posting a list of ingredients that you and your family should stay clear away from and the effects these ingredients have associated with them.
Below I have posted a very informative video...check it out!
